Train Kept a Rollin’

… and not the Tiny Bradshaw, Johnny Burnette, Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Metallica, Imelda May, or Hollywood Vampires versions … Over the weekend, Ogden played host to the world’s largest steam locomotive in operation #4014, aka Big Boy. These trains were used to haul freight over the Wasatch Mountains and traveled between Ogden, UT, and Green River, WY. The Union Pacific built 25 of these in the 1940s, and 8 remain – 7 are on permanent display in various museums while #4014 was pulled off display and restored.

It came through in 2019 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railway, and I saw it in a neighboring town.

The engine and tender are 133 feet long, with a maximum speed of 65 mph, and it weighs 1.2 million pounds. During restoration,  they converted it to oil, and it now burns 20 – 25 gallons of oil per mile – Yikes!

Grandpa Muecke might have seen one of them!

Grandpa Muecke ( on right) retired after 50 years of service as a train engineer.
An estimated 30,000 people came to see the train.

Pretty Impressive!
